Course Information

This 3-day course and exam is open to interested parties who meet the prerequisites (see Tree Risk Assessment Qualification Application Guide) and is limited to 20 arborists (first-come/first-served). The qualification consists of a 2-day educational course followed by a 1/2 day assessment that includes both a written and field component. It is required that you attend the course and successfully complete the assessment in order to receive this qualification.

Registration closes on August 21, 2020 or when class is filled. All payments are due by August 21, 2020. Cancellation/refund requests must be submitted by August 21, 2020. All applications will be reviewed for approval. Your registration will be finalized via email.

What to do now:

  1. Read the Tree Risk Assessment Qualification Application Guide
  2. Register beginning  August 10, 2020

What to bring to class:

  1. Your government-issued photo ID
  2. TRAQ Manual and Workbook
  3. Hard hat and high-visibility vest or shirt
  4. #2 pencils and clipboard for taking notes
  5. Rain gear, including large zip-lock bag

Please dress for your comfort level indoors and outdoors; we cannot always control the room temperature to suit everyone. Come prepared to spend part of the day outdoors.

Confirmation Packet:

You will receive a confirmation packet containing a letter with the date and time of the course and the name of the appropriate contact person. The confirmation packet includes one copy each of the Tree Risk Assessment Manual, TRAQ Clipboard, and Tree Risk Assessment Workbook. Individuals taking a retake exam will not receive a new manual or workbook. No refunds or discounts are given if you already own the Tree Risk Assessment Manual.

Confirmation packets will be shipped to the address provided on the personal information registration page. Please provide a physical shipping address.

ISA cannot ship to a PO box.

Prerequisites:

To earn a Tree Risk Assessment Qualification you must hold or have held one of the following prerequisites. Please indicate which prerequisite(s) can be used to verify your eligibility. For non-ISA credentials, please submit a copy of a certificate, credential identification card, diploma, or similar documentation.

  • Current ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualified holder registering to re-qualify
  • ISA Certified Arborist Number
  • ISA BCMA Number
  • Society of American Foresters (SAF) Certified Forester
  • Arboriculture, Urban Forestry, Traditional Forestry, or Horticulture Degree from an accredited college or university
  • Other from the TRAQ Handbook

Jim Flott is president of Community Forestry Consultants, Inc. (CFC). CFC provides TreeWorks™ tree management software; inventories and appraisals; management plans; risk assessment and risk management plans; tree preservation plans; diagnosis; expert witness; forensic investigations; urban forestry program reviews; training workshops; and urban forestry, arboriculture, and horticulture consulting services to individuals, corporations, universities, municipalities, county and state agencies, cemeteries, and golf courses in the United States and Canada. He received his B.S. degree in horticulture from Iowa State University and his M.S. degree in forest pathology from the University of Arizona and has over 40 years work experience in the horticulture, urban forestry and arboriculture industries. He is an ISA certified arborist and certified municipal specialist; American Society of Consulting Arborists registered consulting arborist; PNW-ISA TRACE instructor and certified tree risk assessor; and ISA TRAQ instructor and assessor.
