Pruning is the signature practice of arboriculture--the most sold service that tree care companies offer. Correctly performed, pruning ensures sound structure in a developing shade tree, enhances the form, beauty, and performance of trees in landscapes, and pruning adds value to a living landscape legacy. Over several decades pruning science changed the way cuts are made, the way we approach training of trees in their various growth stages, and our understanding of pruning as a mitigating factor in tree hazard reduction. This presentation will review some of the pruning milestones over the years and pose some questions that still need an answer. Recent work on pruning the climate ready tree study in California will be discussed to illuminate how tree genetics dictate pruning requirements.
