While most urban forestry professionals are aware that fewer than 10% of trees have a dioecious natural history, fewer might be aware that the fauna and fungi of the urban forest have diverse genders and reproductive systems.
Please join Dr. Christine Wilkinson for a thoughtful discussion on how and where “queerness” – defined as both non-binary gender expression and non-heterosexual behavior–manifests biologically in the plants, animals, fungi, and pollinators of the urban forest.
Following the learning session, Dr. Wilkinson will host a question-and-answer session.
This 90-minute Wednesday Webinar is a collaboration between the Pride Network, LGBTree, and the Western Chapter Education Committee.
Bio:
Dr. Christine Wilkinson is a conservation scientist, carnivore ecologist, and urban ecologist currently working as a postdoc at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and the California Academy of Sciences. Her research interests include human-wildlife interactions, movement ecology, environmental justice, multidisciplinary mapping, and using participatory methods for more effective, equitable, and inclusive conservation outcomes.
As a science communicator, she has worked with National Geographic Society, National Geographic Partners/Disney, Plimsoll Productions, PBS, and others on various projects and productions (including acting, scriptwriting, content development, podcasts, and social media campaigns). She also has experience as a panelist, presenter, and educator for audiences of all backgrounds. She is grateful to be a National Geographic Explorer, Schmidt Science Fellow, Switzer Fellow, and a member of the IUCN Hyaena Specialist Group.
Importantly, she is a whole person not defined by her science. She is a musician who plays the cello and guitar; she sings and is a performing member of the San Francisco Taiko Dojo. She dabbles in comedy and is unashamedly a fan of dad jokes. Dog whispering, hiking, biking, running, reading, windsurfing (a.k.a. falling while trying to windsurf), and other ocean play are also her passions.
