Desert Green XXVIII - Lean and Lush presented by Start Nursery
Desert Green XXVIII is a program that focuses on the concept of "lush and lean" landscaping, which aims to balance beauty and efficiency in desert environments. The program explores how to create landscapes that are visually appealing while also being water-efficient and sustainable in arid regions.
Participants in Desert Green XXVIII learn about various landscaping techniques, plant selections, irrigation methods, and design principles that can help create lush and attractive outdoor spaces using minimal water resources. The program emphasizes the importance of using native and drought-tolerant plants, reducing water waste, and implementing smart irrigation practices to achieve a balance between aesthetics and environmental responsibility.
Five concurrent sessions:
- Thursday: Arboriculture, Spanish Language, Irrigation, Plants, Pesticide
- Friday: Arboriculture, Turfgrass, Irrigation, Landscape Design, Pesicide
Keynote: Scott Calhoun
Into the Sunset: Reflections from a 25-year-career as a desert plantsman, author, and landscape designer.
After writing 6 books about plants and design and designing over 400 residential gardens in the Southwest, Scott Calhoun is hanging up his wide-brimmed straw hat in 2025. Join him on a retrospective journey through the desert gardens and wild places that inspired him and meet the cast of plant-obsessed characters who egged him on. Learn how his designs have adapted to the climate and changing plant availability over the years, and which elements of desert gardens and plants still get him excited. Scott will also speak to the future of desert gardening in the region, and how to develop skills to address changing development patterns, water scarcity, and the human desire for beauty and green.
