The Western Chapter is proud to report that our chapter representatives appeared multiple times on the awards podium last night at this year's International Tree Climbing Championship at the Morton Arboretum. Congratulations to Christina Myers, Daniel Stevens and Jared Abrojena. The winner of the men's Masters' Challenge (which crowns the men's & women's champions) came down to a classic finish between the Western Chapter's Jared Abrojena, current International Champion, and Mark Chisholm of New Jersey. In a finish that some thought too close to call, Jared Abrojena placed 2nd overall and Mark Chisholm notched a 3rd Int'l title to his resume. Christina Myers of Arizona nearly won the Throwline event and landed a solid 2nd place finish to earn her place on the podium in her first appearance at the ITCC. Christina also beat her personal best time in the footlock. Daniel Stevens, also of Arizona, took the podium with a third place finish in the Belayed Speed Climb event, and turned in a strong overall performance for his first trip to the ITCC. Jared Abrojena took first place in the Belayed Speed Climb and Throwline events and placed 2nd in the Masters' Challenge. Special thanks and appreciation to Jared Abrojena for always representing our chapter with such professionalism. As the returning champion, Jared got to wear the orange jersey throughout the event and we're as proud of his performance out of the tree as we are with his skills when aloft. Congratulations to Daniel Stevens, Christina Myers and Jared Abrojena. Full write up to appear in the Fall issue of The Western Arborist. Arboriculture starts in the nursery. The importance of young tree structure both above and below ground has lead to the development of the “Guideline Specifications for Nursery Tree Quality” and the "Strategies for Producing High Quality Container Root Systems, Trunks, and Crowns." The documents represents an effort to combine industry input with the most recent, tested scientific practices to address nursery tree quality and production. Please consider reviewing the documents and distributing them to anyone that may benefit from the information.
The “Guideline Specifications for Nursery Tree Quality” provides specifications for selecting and specifying quality nursery trees in California, with a focus on container stock. Key traits of nursery trees are identified and described to provide growers and buyers with the information they need to distinguish good-quality stock from poor-quality stock.
The "Strategies for Producing High Quality Container Root Systems, Trunks, and Crowns." This document presents strategies to assist growers in producing trees that conform to the Guideline Specifications for Nursery Tree Quality. The strategies are based on most-recently-published and ongoing research, combined with the knowledge, skills, and know-how of both the practitioner and researcher, to produce high-quality root systems, trunks, and crowns . As research progresses and new strategies are developed, this document will be revised to incorporate state-of-the-art information.
