2017 Volunteer Work Day featuring Safe Removal Techniques

Work Day Description:

Another fantastic work day with a new learning experience built in! In exchange for our tree work at Camp Whitsett, the West LA Boy Scouts will make a large financial contribution to The Britton Fund, Inc. Our focus this year is safe removal techniques. We need tree workers and ground workers, as well as lead instructors.

Safe Removal Technique Workshop:

Participants in the workshop will have the hands-on opportunity to work with skills instructors learning the basic safe removal standards and proper felling cuts those looking for advanced rigging and removal skills will be put on crews that will specialize in those types of removals. At the end of the day the volunteers will be removing approximately 120 beetle-killed trees at Camp Whitsett in the southern Sierra mountains.

In addition we will be doing our best to recover as many of saw logs as possible. A crew of woodworkers will be using a Woodmizer (or two) to prepare lumber and turning the products into something usable for the camp.

Equipment needed:

Bucket trucks, loaders, sawmills, whole tree chippers. If you're and able to bring any of these types of large equipment please contact Andy Trotter to organize. Please bring chainsaws, ropes, rigging gear, saw chaps and all other PPE ANSI z133 requirements will be required and enforced during the weekend.

Accommodations:

We will be staying in bunkhouse (shared) cabins. The scouts will be feeds us from snacks Friday night through breakfast Sunday morning. For those interested in bring the families a special family program to help keep kids enjoying the natural enjoyment of the forest will be available. There will also be an opportunity for those interested in a tour of Trail of 100 Giants, the Giant Sequoia grove, at no charge lead by Dr. Jim Downer. 1 CEU will be available for the tour of Trail of 100 Giants.
