Certification For Tree Workers

PURPOSE

  • To establish a meaningful standard of skill and work quality in trained and knowledgeable Tree Workers.
  • To establish and measure a minimum level of training and knowledge for arboricultural workers.
  • To encourage continuing education for those who work in Arboriculture.
  • To promote safe work practices and safety as a frame of mind.

BENEFITS

  • Project a professional company image through advertising the employment of Certified personnel.
  • Improve employment opportunities, as Certification insures an established minimum level of knowledge and training to prospective employers.
  • Contract specifications are including a requirement to employ only Certified personnel on an increasing basis.
  • The W.C I.S.A Tree Worker Study Guide and continuing education requirements provide an excellent training foundation.

PREPARATION

  • The Tree Worker Study Guide is available through the Certification office, which will include most of the material covered in the exam.
  • The Study Guide also lists a number of additional references which will assist in studying for the exam, most of which is available at your library.
  • Arboricultural information is constantly changing and progressing and it is possible that not all required information may be referenced in the Study Guide.
  • Therefore, it is strongly recommended that the applicant broaden his study beyond the listed references.

REQUIREMENTS
  • A minimum of 18 months verifiable experience in arboriculture.
  • Sponsorship by an I.S.A Certified Arborist, W.C I.S.A Officer or Certification Committee member.
  • Provide proof of current CPR and First Aid
  • Provide proof of  completion of aerial rescue 
  • Pass a written multiple choice examination covering:
    (The test is in both  English and Spanish)
    • Biology 25% (includes tree identification
    • Cabling 12%
    • Planting 12$
    • Pruning 26%
    • Safety 24%
  • Pass a practical examination covering:
      • Climbing Skills
      • Knots and equipment


    Applicants now can choose to take the practical examination by climbing and/or by using an aerial lift (lift must be in compliance with all safety requirements and must be provided by the applicant).
    Sign the I.S.A Code of Ethics and Wavier Form provided.
    Notify the WC I.S.A Certification Committee immediately upon change of address and/or employment.

    EXAMINATIONS


    • Examinations are held regularly throughout the Western Chapter area (CA-NV-AZ-HI).
    • A list of dates and locations is available well in advance of exams, and is printed regularly in the Western Arborist, and on our web page.
    • Oral exams are offered in Spanish and English upon written request.
    • Contact the Certification office for more information.
    • Exams will not be given unless 6 persons are registered.
    • Maximum capacity for exam is 25 persons. Date of registration determines cutoff.
