Training: The CAA Climbing Skills Workshop is entering its 27th year of providing tree care professionals with affordable hands-on training by volunteer instructors that have numerous years of field experience and competition endeavors. Tree workers can practice for the WCISA Certified Tree Worker examination at the work climb station and upon request, Certificates of participation for the Aerial Rescue station will be given to climbers showing skill and proficiency to the instructor. Climbers will increase their enjoyment and productivity, become more confident and efficient, gain skills with new tricks & tips with a 6 to 1 ratio with instructors. Instruction in English & Spanish includes information on climbing gear, getting the most from your ropes, knots and carabiners, rigging equipment and techniques (when available), aerial rescue, workclimb and competition skills.

Instructors: All participants will learn the latest innovative techniques from skilled and qualified climbers. Our volunteer panel of instructors includes TCC international and regional champions and competition participants.

Qualifications: From entry level to intermediate, this program will offer information and training for all levels.

Equipment: All participants must bring their own climbing gear, including rope, saddle, flipline and safety gear. All equipment must be Cal-OSHA approved and will be inspected.

Directions: From Hwy 80: take Hwy 780 East, take the 2nd St. Exit, turn left @ stoplight onto E. 2nd St. Turn right @ stoplight onto Military West. Go one block to City Park on the left. From Hwy 680: take Hwy 780 West, take the 2nd St. Exit, turn left @ stop sign onto E. 2nd St. Turn right @ stoplight onto Military West. Go one block to City Park on the left.

∗Learn to climb - no experience necessary, first step to becoming a tree worker. Understanding your equipment, knowing your knots, one-on-one instruction with hands-on practice all day.

∗Setting your climbing line - practice techniques of throw line & bag.

∗Methods of entering a tree - secured footlock, body thrust, self belay, assisted belay, climbing without spurs, effective use & methods of the throwline.

∗Planning & the Workclimb - Working out on a limb: maneuvers for efficiency & safety, setting false crotches - in a tree or on the ground, retrievable false crotches, double crotching.

∗Aerial rescue practice & certificate of participation.

∗Competition skills: learn & practice competition skills with WCISA & ISA competitors & champions when available.

Making contact with an energized power line can be deadly. Don’t let that happen to you. Overhead and underground power lines run throughout Valley neighborhoods, bringing electricity to homes and businesses. Workers need to be aware of these facilities and understand how to avoid the potential hazards they pose.To help you work safely, SRP invites you to a free workshop. The workshop includes lunch, and you have a chance to win raffle prizes. Presentations and materials will be available in English and Spanish. Workshop participants can receive 5 CEUs (a/u/t/M) from the International Society of Arboriculture. This no-cost workshop will be held Saturday, February 25, 2012, at the PERA Club in Tempe.

*Participants must be 18 or older, and seating is limited to the first 400 people who register by February 17, 2012.

In this webinar, a series of lectures will be presented on the concepts in the ANR publication, "A Planner's Guide for Oak Woodlands" (UC ANR Publication 3491). The goal will be to create an awareness of the ecological, economic and social values of California's oak woodlands, and some general planning strategies to ensure long-term conservation of this resource. The selected audience includes city, county, regional and statewide planners, environmental consultants, conservation organizations, land trusts, resource professionals, elected officials, and NGO's.

A four part series of 2-hour lectures will be offered on-line through a link to Adobe Connect. Publicity will be via lists of local planners, professional resource managers and general oak interest groups, as well as press releases. The series will be taped and a link to the taped webinar series will be provided for those who are unable to participate on the date and time of the live broadcast. There will also be a weekend field trip to Hopland and/or Sierra Research and Extension Centers at the end of the series. Participants will register for the webinar and pay a nominal fee ($30) to receive a copy of the publication, "A Planner's Guide for Oak Woodlands" and to cover incidental production fees. A social network site will be developed to enhance the sharing of information, and to provide follow-up networking opportunities. Following the completion of the series, surveys of participants will determine the program effectiveness, and planning activities implemented.

University of California Cooperative Extension and The Professional Tree Care Association of San Diego Present:

Fruit Tree Pruning Workshop for Professionals.

Please join us at the Stein Family Farm in National City for hands-on demonstrations and in-the-field practice to increase your knowledge and proficiency in pruning practices for fruit trees including citrus and other subtropical species.

Practical pruning tools and their use - training exercises to make good cuts.

Basics for Citrus and subtropical fruits: citrus, avocado, guava, and fig trees.

Pest identification and IPM solutions.

Hands-on pruning of the trees on the property until 3:00 pm.

What to bring: Hand pruners, loppers, handsaws, and gloves. Field attire and shoes.

Course Information

The combination of classroom lectures and field work includes modules on biology, structural mechanics, risk theory and practice, reading tree conditions, assessing and assigning risk levels, and prescribing risk mitigation strategies. Day One lectures cover all material in the course manual. On Day Two, the morning will be spent examining trees and practicing assessment skills and data recording. The exam is held on the afternoon of Day Two (for 2.5 hours).

Upon successful completion of the course and exam, participants will be accredited as PNW-ISA Certified Tree Risk Assessors and meet current industry standards. This training course applies to all work activities in and around trees located in urban and urban/rural interface areas. The closed book exam is 2.5 hours in length. A mark of 85% or better is required to pass. The qualification is valid for four years.

Another fantastic work day! In exchange for our tree work at Camp Whitsett, the West LA Boy Scouts will make a large financial contribution to The Britton Fund, Inc. Our focus this year is fire safety and reducing the risk of tree failure. We need tree workers and ground workers, as well as general volunteers.

Three years technical field experience in tree care with at least one year of assumed responsibility for safety (i.e., crew leader, trainer, safety committee member, emergency responder, certified CPR/first aid provider, etc.), or...

Six month’s technical field experience and one year in a professional safety position, or...

Two or four year degree in Arboriculture, Forestry, Ornamental/Environmental Horticulture, Natural Resources, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety or other related field with an internship that provided technical field experience.

Come out to William S. Land Park in historic Sacramento this May to watch 2011 Champions Daniel Stevens and Rhonda Wood defend their champion titles. Preliminary events will be held Saturday, May 12^th with the Master’s Challenge on Sunday. The 2012 champions will represent the Western Chapter in Portland this summer at the International Level.

William S. Land Park is a great venue for outdoor displays and fun for the whole family. With over 215 acres , this regional park includes many amenties, including the Sacramento Zoo, Fairytale Town, Funderland, Picnic Areas, Wading Pool, Basketball Court, Adventure Play Area, Lakes, Amphitheatre, Rock Garden, Jogging Path, Village Green, Golf Course, Off-street Parking, Restrooms.
