A300 Planting and Transplanting Summit - TCIA

Conference Description:

The summit will bring together industry speakers and experts who will review the latest innovations, techniques and equipment used in planting and transplanting trees. Attendees will also participate in afternoon workshops to learn how to use the standards and determine if changes are needed.  The ANSI A300 (Part 6) Planting and Transplanting standards are being revised. They are performance standards for the planting and transplanting of trees, shrubs and other woody plants and guidelines for writing work specifications. Instructors include: Dr. Larry Costello, Dr. Tom Smiley, Dr. Richard Rathjens, Mr. Dennis Swartzell.

8:00 am Registration
8:30 am Introduction. Understanding how to use the current A300 Part 6 Planting and Transplanting standard.
9:15 am Dr. Tom Smiley: Root collars and cutting circling roots when transplanting. Based on research and professional experience of Dr. Ed Gilman, Dr. Kelby Fite, and Dr. Tom Smiley, this session will cover issues relating to root collar condition and mitigation of circling roots at the time of transplanting.

10:15 am Dr. Richard Rathjens: Deep planting of landscape trees. Based on research and professional experience of Dr. Rathjens, this session will cover issues related to planting depth of trees.
10:45 am Dr. Richard Rathjens: Deep planting of landscape trees. Based on research and professional experience of Dr. Rathjens, this session will cover issues related to planting depth of trees.
11:15 Am Dr. Larry Costello: Planting and early care of trees: 5 key steps. Based on research and professional experience of Dr. Costello, this session will cover issues related to planting and early care of trees.

1:00 pm Afternoon workshop session 1: Creating a flow chart for planting operations. Do you have one? What should be in a standard planting/transplanting operations flow chart? Attendees will help create a flowchart that they can use for their operation as well as a standard industry flow chart.
2:30 pm Break
2:45 pm Afternoon workshop session 2: Wrap-up. Are there gaps in the current standard? Attendees will participate in guiding the content of the next pruning standard, especially where improvements can be made.
